Exploring The Possibilities Of Sycamore

Exploring unusual materials, or materials which are not traditionally associated with floral design, is a core principal of my business. I love to experiment and discover new ways of seeing. It keeps my work fresh and my spirit invigorated.

Recently, I discovered some beautifully interesting Sycamore. The underside of the leaves was a rich, vivid burgundy (my signature colour), with delicate and textural seeds hanging in long clusters. I respectfully foraged a few boughs and took them back to the studio.

As I only collected a few to sample, I decided to create a bowl arrangement which explored the drape of the seeds, and the shapes of the leaves. Here, I am using a heavy marble footed bowl which is quite shallow. The dark tones of the marble work with the deep burgundy. The weight of it helps ground the design, both in a practical sense, as each element was very light, but also aesthetically. The only mechanic is a centrally placed vintage Kenzan, secured with floral putty.

I established the initial outline of the design using longer branching elements, before introducing the draping seeds. I either placed these within the Kenzan, or wove them amongst the already secured branches. The leaves were quite strong, and were happy to be placed where I chose without too much protest!

I love the rich colours and textures of this design. The bowl elevates a foraged, single variety material into the arena of luxury. I shall continue to explore what is creatively possible with Sycamore. It is a tree which is abundant in my area, so there shall be plenty of opportunities in the future to create an even more dramatic design.
